Overview
1 Samuel 16 unveils the anointing of David as king over Israel, a pivotal moment ordained by God. The chapter begins with the Lord instructing Samuel to cease mourning for Saul, who has been rejected by God, and to go to Jesse of Bethlehem, for God has chosen one of his sons as the next king. Amidst this process, the Lord emphasizes looking beyond outward appearances, for He judges by the heart. David, the youngest son, tending the sheep, is anointed in the presence of his brothers. Following his anointing, the Spirit of the Lord mightily comes upon David. The chapter also describes Saul’s tormented spirit and his servants’ suggestion to find a skilled harp player to soothe him. David is brought to Saul, serving him as his armor bearer and playing the harp to alleviate Saul’s distress. This historical account underscores God's sovereignty in selecting leaders and His intricate plans for positioning His chosen, even within complex circumstances.
