Overview
Genesis 48 depicts a significant family event where Jacob, near the end of his life, bestows blessings upon his grandsons, Ephraim and Manasseh, sons of Joseph. This act carries profound meaning, as Jacob adopts them as his own sons, thus giving Joseph a double portion of his inheritance. In a surprising move, Jacob crosses his arms and places his right hand on Ephraim, the younger, signifying a greater blessing, and his left hand on Manasseh, the firstborn. This action echoes previous themes in Genesis where younger siblings are chosen over older ones. Jacob then recounts God's promise to him and passes on this blessing to Ephraim and Manasseh. This chapter highlights the continuation of God’s covenant through Abraham’s lineage and the unexpected ways in which His promises and blessings are fulfilled.
