Overview
Luke 1 sets the stage for the unfolding Gospel narrative by detailing the miraculous events leading up to the births of John the Baptist and Jesus Christ. The chapter begins with an introduction to the reader, explaining the careful research undertaken to present an accurate account. The story moves to the priest Zechariah, who is visited by the angel Gabriel and informed of his wife Elizabeth's upcoming miraculous pregnancy with John. Despite his doubt, the prophecy comes to pass, and Elizabeth conceives. Six months later, Gabriel visits Mary, a young virgin engaged to Joseph, to announce that she will conceive Jesus, the Son of God. Mary's faithful acceptance leads to a visit with her relative Elizabeth, where the unborn John leaps for joy in his mother's womb. Mary praises God in the Magnificat. The chapter concludes with John's birth and Zechariah's prophetic song of praise, the Benedictus, foretelling the redemption through Jesus Christ.
