Are You Faithfully and Wisely Sharing God's Word in Its Due Season?
Matt. 24:45 Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season? 46 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. 47 Verily I say unto you, that he shall make him ruler over all his goods.
When I read this text, the phrase that stands out most to me today is “to give them meat in due season”. In context, this is the servant’s assignment; to faithfully and wisely distribute meat in a timely manner. What about you? Have you been faithful and wise in distributing the Word of God to others in a timely fashion? If you’re like me, this thought brings much conviction. I automatically start thinking about how short I fall of all three of these guidelines. First, what about faithfulness? This speaks of a constant performance of duties or services. Second, what about wisdom? This speaks of the right use or exercise of knowledge. This means it not only matters what you are doing for God, but how you are doing it. Third, what about timing? The phrase “due season” shows us that not only does it matter what your are doing, and how you are doing it, but also when you are doing it. For me, this causes me to think of all the opportunities that were right, that I totally forfeited because of my bashfulness, fears, and yes, sometimes even laziness and apathy. So, when is the time right to serve God? When is the time right to speak the Word into someone’s life? Consider what Paul told Timothy in 2 Tim. 4:2, “Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season…” The word instant here means pressing, urgent, immediate, quick, making no delay. This leads me to believe that the sewer (that’s you and me) is to sew the seed of The Word of God always, whether it appears to us that the season for the hearer is right or not. 1 Cor. 3:7 teaches us that while some plant and others water, it is God that gives the increase. That said, as disciples of Christ, we are to be less concerned with sampling the soil upon which we are sewing, and more concerned with simply spreading the Word of God, and allowing God to do with it what He wills! Then, if we are found faithful, wise, and timely as clockwork, our Father who sees our faithfulness over a few things will make us ruler over many. May God help us to do just that for His glory!
