From Battle to Building: Understanding God's Timing in Our Lives

1 Kings 5:3
Thou knowest how that David my father could not build an house unto the name of the LORD his God for the wars which were about him on every side, until the LORD put them under the soles of his feet.

This reminds me of Ecclesiastes 3:3 which teaches that there is a time to break down, and a time to build up. Although David had it in his heart to build up a temple unto The Lord, it was not the right time and season in his lifetime. The reason was simple; his assignment was to defeat the enemies of Israel, in order to bring about a peaceful reign under which his son would succeed to the throne, enjoy the benefits hand down to him, and thereby build the temple during a time of peace throughout the land. God knew that during David’s reign, the times and seasons were too turbulent for the building of the temple. There first had to be a season of breaking down before building back up. So, David’s assignment was to break down, and Solomon’s assignment was to build up. David was to break down the enemy’s strongholds, threats, powers, and kingdoms round about Israel, so that a new rule and reign of the nation of Israel could be established. Then and only then would they be ready for the procurement and sustainability of a temple to The Lord.

You see, God wants to bless us, but He saves His best blessings for seasons of sustainability so that they can both bless AND endure. Perhaps you are praying for blessings that have not yet come. Perhaps it seems as if more is being removed than placed into your life. If so, think this not a strange thing. It seems to me as if this is God’s method of operation, so to speak. It seems to me, after careful consideration of not only this passage, but several others throughout the Bible, that God sets things in order for the sustainability of His rule, reign, and administration of blessings and responsibilities. In order to do this, He must first help us defeat all enemies who have set up camp in our lives to prevent us from expanding His Gospel Kingdom in the earth.

So, perhaps the reason you have not been able to build up yet, is because you have been in a breaking down season; that is, breaking down the powers of hell in your life one at a time, until at last every foe is defeated, and therefore no longer a viable, immediate, or eminent threat to the success of what it is that you are striving to build on behalf of God’s work.

Let this be a word of encouragement to you; God knows what to build, how to build it, and when to build it. Meanwhile, learn to thank Him for the prep work of breaking down FIRST.
