Called to Serve: Finding Our Place in God’s Plan
1 Chronicles 9:27
And they lodged round about the house of God, because the charge was upon them, and the opening thereof every morning pertained to them.
Here is another Old Testament truth fitting for New Testament application. Namely, that as believers in Jesus Christ, our entire social life should be lined up with the specific charge that our Lord places upon us as it pertains to our divinely-guided calling and involvement in the local church. What’s that? You are a Christian, and yet you feel you have no charge upon your life to get involved in the local church? Then I say, read the scriptures until you find yours! Our Lord never places anyone in His Kingdom for the sole purpose of saving them from Hell. As mentioned in yesterday’s devotion, we are His workmanship created in Christ Jesus unto good works (see Eph. 2:10). In other words, there is a place fit for us, that we ought to be getting fit for! And yet, many who have put their hand to the plow, have looked back, and therefore are not fit for the Kingdom. Simply put, they are not properly focused, fit, prepared, or ready to be used of God.
However, just as you might have noticed in our reading today, the sons of Jediael (1 Chron. 7:11) were “fit to go out for war and battle.” Are you? Again we see in today’s reading in 1 Chronicles 9:13 a group of men that were “very able men for the work of the service of the house of God.” Are you? And yet again, we find even singers in 1 Chronicles 9:33 who “were employed in that work day and night.” It just seems that the overwhelming theme our Lord is highlighting for us today is that we should focus on becoming able, fit, and engaged in God’s work in God’s house.
For us, that is the local church. God ordained no other institution under Heaven to be the pillar and ground of truth. It is therefore our grave responsibility to propagate His truth through the mechanism of His church. Even in our own society here in America, in early American history, our social structure was built around the church, which gave us the foundation upon which to build perhaps the most blessed and successful nation in history. But, as we have moved further and further away from that model, we have shifted further away from truth, and have found ourselves on shifting sand. Find your charge in God’s House, get fit and prepared, then get busy doing it!
