Serving God Without Expectations: The Life of David
Psalm 89:20
I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him:
What was it about David that caused God to stop His search for a choice servant? In our text, notice the state in which God found David, prior to His anointing him to be king. “I have found David MY SERVANT…[emphasis mine]” It would appear that God found David while he was in the very act of serving Him. It goes without saying that if you are looking for someone to work for you, a good place to start would be to select one who already is working for you without compensation!
Looking at the word 'servant' here, in its original, it means a bondservant. A quick definition search for the meaning of this word yields this result; “a person bound in service without wages”. Get this; David was so in awe of his Creator God that he bound himself to His service because he loved Him, and for no other reason! Spending time in the presence of the King of Kings was pay enough for little David!!
Is it any wonder that when the Lord rebuked king Saul in 1 Samuel 13:14 to inform him that He was fixing to replace him with David, that he told him, “…the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people…”? Essentially, what God was saying of David was that David’s worship won His heart!
Can we worship God without compensation for doing so? Can we adore Him in all His glory even if/when we are at a disadvantage in life? Or do we need Him to come through for us before we give Him praise? Know this; he who worships God with no strings attached wins the heart of God, the results of which are indescribable and unstoppable! Worship Him, like David, with your service to Him, NO MATTER WHAT!!
