Overview
Exodus 10 narrates the continuation of the plagues with the eighth and ninth calamities befalling Egypt. The chapter begins with the plague of locusts, where Moses and Aaron warn Pharaoh of the impending disaster. Despite his officials' advice to let the Israelites go, Pharaoh's heart remains hardened. When the locusts cover the land, devouring all crops and greenery, Pharaoh briefly relents and asks for forgiveness, only to harden his heart again once the locusts are removed.
The ninth plague is that of darkness, a thick and tangible darkness that envelops Egypt for three days, isolating the Egyptians in a state of immobility and despair. In stark contrast, the Israelites have light in their dwellings. Pharaoh offers to let the people go but insists on retaining their livestock, which Moses refuses. The chapter ends with Pharaoh threatening Moses with death if he sees his face again, setting the stage for the final, most devastating plague. This series of events underscores the relentless nature of God’s judgments and the unyielding obstinacy of Pharaoh.
