Overview
Luke 4 opens with Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, led into the wilderness where He is tempted by the devil for forty days. In three instances, the devil tempts Jesus, and each time, Jesus counters with Scripture, ultimately triumphing over Satan's temptations. Returning to Galilee, Jesus begins His public ministry, reading from the prophet Isaiah in the synagogue of Nazareth. Though His teaching initially astonishes the listeners, they become enraged when Jesus speaks of God's mercy extended to Gentiles in Israel's history. They even attempt to throw Him off a cliff, but He miraculously passes through their midst. Jesus then performs various miracles, casting out demons and healing the sick, affirming His identity as the promised Messiah and the Son of God.
